Severity: High
Can damage expensive parts or affect drivability. Limit driving and book promptly.
What P0087 means
Fuel rail pressure is below what the computer is commanding. On a diesel this causes low power, hard starts and stalling; it can also mean the high-pressure pump is failing.
Symptoms
- Hard start or no start
- Low power or limp mode
- Stalling under load
Common causes
Most likely first
- 1Clogged fuel filter
- 2Weak lift / transfer pump
- 3Air in the fuel supply
- 4Failing high-pressure pump
- 5Leaking pressure relief valve or injectors returning too much fuel
How we diagnose it
- Replace or inspect fuel filters first
- Measure supply (low-side) pressure
- Compare desired vs. actual rail pressure in live data
- Injector return-flow test
- Inspect filter for metal if a CP4 pump is suspected
Every vehicle sets codes under its own conditions. We check the factory diagnostic steps and service bulletins for your VIN, so the repair targets the actual cause.
